This is one term that has been quoted again and again and again, and has suddenly gained rockstar fame and significance. Me-time. In the dictionary it means, “time spent relaxing on one’s own as opposed to working or doing things for others, seen as an opportunity to reduce stress or restore energy”. That’s wonderful.
My interpretation of the term is doing something that give you joy, makes you smile from within, gives you a sense of calm and achievement. It’s that time of the day when you step away from the craziness of the day and spend doing something which helps you get back the sanity you need to deal with life.
I love my Me-time. And there no specific time allotted for it. Anytime I’m reading, I’m in the “zone”, and that time is totally me-time. Nothing gives me more joy or soothes my frayed nerves like a good book. It relaxes me like nothing else. No coffee, no foot massages, no retail therapy, no nothing. Just me and my books and that’s as close to paradise as I can get.
Then comes cooking, or more specifically baking. I’m no Racheal Allen or Gordon Ramsey but I like to bake. Cakes, cookies, biscuits, etc, etc. It’s therapeutic for me. Yeah but of late this hobby of mine can no longer be counted as me time ever since my children decided to join in and try their hand at it. It’s more of a lovely bonding time with them and I enjoy it thoroughly.
So I guess I have to go back to my first love – reading – and seek solace in the pages of the book I’m reading right now. No complaints. Me time is for me, exclusively for me and I’m fiercely possessive about it.
