Welcome to the Tuesday Toots!
I recently asked a group of final-year engineering students a simple yet essential question: “What skills have you acquired to give you an edge when applying for jobs?”
The silence was deafening. Not one student had an answer.
This moment of realization is not uncommon. Time and again, I’ve seen students taken aback by the importance of skills beyond their academic qualifications.
But why is skill development so often overlooked when it plays such a critical role in building careers?

Why Is Skill Development Ignored?
During the formative years, students may dabble in extracurricular activities, but as they get older, these “non-academic” skills are sidelined.
The emphasis on academic marks, sadly, pushes skill-building to the back burner. For many, the concept of skills is also limited to creative pursuits like painting, dancing, or singing.
Skills like problem-solving, communication, or leadership are not given the same attention, despite their undeniable importance in both personal and professional life.
Why Focus Should Be on Skill Development?
The harsh truth dawns on them during their first job interview.
Recruiters today are looking for more than just technical knowledge—they’re looking for well-rounded individuals with soft skills like leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Skill development isn’t just about professional success—it’s about becoming confident, independent, and capable of navigating the challenges life throws at us.
It enhances creativity, encourages curiosity, and helps individuals grow into better collaborators and leaders.
Why Are The Students Losing Out On?
One of the biggest reasons students shy away from skill development is the fear of failure. Any attempt to develop new skills requires stepping out of the comfort zone, which can feel intimidating and overwhelming. There’s a fear of standing out, of doing something different from the norm.
This fear is compounded by a lack of resources and opportunities. If skill development isn’t part of the regular curriculum, students remain unaware of its value. Without proper encouragement, they fail to see the importance of acquiring skills beyond textbooks.
Final Wrap Up
It’s time for a wakeup call: Our traditional approach to education needs to change. We must move beyond a focus solely on academic excellence and create a balance that values both knowledge and practical skills.
Skill development must be seen as an essential part of education—one that will prepare students to thrive in an ever-evolving world. Parents and educators need to take the first step in recognizing its value and making it a priority in the lives of the younger generation.
Focus must be to cultivate well-rounded, confident individuals who are not only prepared for the workforce but for life itself.
